Think banana bread can't be low carb? Think again, this banana-less bread tastes just like the real thing and you'll never guess my health-boosting secret ingredient
I love baking. I bake almost daily and have since I was a little girl. For me, certain baked goods are extra comforting. Banana bread will always be on that extra warm and comfy list. Who didn't grow up with the smell of enticing, warm banana bread wafting through their kitchen? YUM. Since I try to eat as low carb as possible, bananas are a rare occurrence in my diet. I know this is the case for my fellow keto, low carb, and sugar intolerant friends. Banana bread is a treat that's generally off-limits. Not anymore!
In regards to baking, I'm notorious for just throwing things together. I tend not to measure and just dump this and that into a bowl and mix it up. To be honest, I've become quite good at this. Nearly everything I bake comes out delish. This recipe was an experiment that, to my surprise, turned out so incredibly delicious. I really couldn't believe it. Of course, I didn't measure any of the ingredients. So I did have to recreate it many times using varying measurements to get it just right. After several attempts, I have to say that I've done just that. Oh boy, is it RIGHT! So banana-y, with just the right amounts of warm cinnamon and nutmeg, and don't even get me started on the texture...so moist. Not eating the whole darn loaf has presented itself as quite the challenge.
Now, you may be wondering how I've imparted the delicious banana flavor into this bread without the most important ingredient, bananas. This is where this recipe really gets interesting and why the fact that it worked at all surprised me so much. First, let me say that I am a health nut through and through. I get most of my vitamins and nutrients through whole organic foods. There is, however, one supplement I take every single day that has completely changed the way I feel and has taken my health, both mental and physical, to the next level. You're probably wondering what in the world does this have to do with this scrumptious baked good? Drum roll please......my secret ingredient is ketones! Yep, you read that right. Didn't think you could bake with these healthy little miracle workers? Well, in a complete stroke of luck, I found out that indeed you can.
Ketones themselves are so uber beneficial for your body and overall health. The list of benefits is unbelievably impressive and a mile long, so I'll just briefly touch on the subject here. Ketones are naturally made by our bodies when we are in a state of fasting and efficiently burning fat for fuel. This is called ketosis. Through ketone supplementation, we can shift our bodies into this beneficial state without the need to fast which, let's face it, is not the most enjoyable thing in the world. Even if you do eat carbs, these supplements will allow you to reap the benefits of ketosis. Completely and utterly amazing, if I do say so myself. I don't take a lot of supplements, as I stated earlier I get most of my nutrients from the food I eat. I do, however, take my ketones religiously. As an active and extremely healthy person, I've always been into nutrition and overall wellness. I can say with complete certainty and honesty that ketones have allowed my body to reach a new level of health that I didn't know was possible.
Here is a shortlist of some, but not even close to all, of the health benefits of ketone supplementation:
-Blood sugar balance and enhanced insulin sensitivity
-Improved energy levels, oxygen capacity, and athletic performance
-Increased neuroprotective benefits and cognitive function
-Increased satiety and decreased cravings
-Improved digestion and hormonal balance
-Mental clarity and focus
-Mood booster
-Stress and Anxiety relief
-Prevention of cardiovascular disease, strokes, and migraines
-Improved cholesterol levels
-Inflammation management
-Energy, energy, and more energy
So I can enjoy these health perks while stuffing my face with scrumptious homemade banana bread? Sign me up! All-day long. As far as the health benefits of ketones, I could seriously keep on going and going. However, you must be aware of the fact that, as with all other types of supplements, not all ketones are created equal. There is only one brand in the world that is made through a natural fermentation process. This is the only one I will put in my body. If you're interested in learning more about my ketone supplements, I've posted an article about them that you can find under the nutrition section of my blog or you can click here to read it. Now back to the bread!
This banana-less banana bread not only tastes like the real thing, I actually like it better. Knowing that it is not loaded down with sugar and carbs, and actually has numerous health benefits, makes every mouth-watering bite even more satisfying. You can indulge in several slices and not feel guilty, nope not one little bit. Each slice has only 54 calories and 3 net carbs per serving and it is also gluten-free. I'll provide links to all of the ingredients you can't usually find at the grocery store and list all nutritional information at the end of the recipe.
Enjoy!
